a meal from down under.
Where can you find the most authentic Australian food in New York City? The Thirsty Koala.
The best part? The gluten free food here is everything and more.
When we work with restaurants, we focus on the food. But for the Thirsty Koala, I have to share about one of the owners, Katherine Fuchs, who happens to be in charge of the kitchen. Katherine eats gluten free because of her joints. She has also been vegan. She totally understands what it’s like to have dietary restrictions impact both the search for and experience at restaurants.
Before we dive into the food at this Australian favorite, we have to share a couple cool things about Fuchs. Not only does this woman know how to take care of gluten frees, she also has a pretty inspiring story. Katherine Fuchs was a first responder on one of the most tragic days in US history: September 11, 2001. After being remembered as one of the many heroes on that day, she pursued her passion for cooking. Her talents as a chef have brought her all over the world – including the popular tv show, Chopped.
We were so happy to have sat down with her and learn about her life and the story behind The Thirsty Koala.
Now to the food, which was just as cool as the people making it. We spent over three hours tasting different items on this menu from down under. Each and every bite of the food at The Thirsty Koala is mouth watering. We were so surprised that they have mastered making so many of these Australian favorites gluten free! (but wow, am I thankful!)
Here is a look at each of the delicious dishes we tried:
Bread with olive oil and a dip made of kalamata olives and sun dried tomatoes.
Crispy Fried Calamari (a must if you stop by The Thirsty Koala)
Thea’s Meatballs and Corn and Jalapeño Fritters
Kangaroo Burger with the Lot (this was a first for us!)
Crispy Pacific Cod (a much-needed fix for our fish and chips craving since we left England)
Warm Organic Quinoa & Cauliflower Salad
Grilled Australian Herb & Wattleseed Crusted Lamb Lollies (easily one of our favorites!)
Salted Caramel Slices
Sticky Date Pudding
Two of my favorite things are meeting amazing people and trying new things, both of which I did at The Thirsty Koala! It was a meal that I will never forget.
